Abstract:

In the present study emission performance of a diesel engine (Lister Petter) was evaluated at different compression ratios and engine loads with soybean methyl ester and its 25%, 50%, 75% blends with diesel fuel at constant speed 1500 rpm. Exhaust emissions included CO, CO2, HC and NOx. The compression ratio and engine load varied from 14 to 20 with an interval 1 and 25 to 100% with an interval 25%, respectively. The experimental results indicated that for all combination of compression ratios and engine loads, it could be concluded that B75 and B100 could be safely blended without significantly affecting the emissions (CO, CO2, HC and NOx). Concerning the costs, B75 is more economical than B100. Thus B75 could be a cleaner, more appropriate alternative fuel than pure diesel.

Investigation of performance and exhaust emission of diesel engine in different ratios of lambda coefficient using diesel-ethanol fuel blends

In recent decades, rising greenhouse gas emissions have become a major challenge and concern. Environmental pollution is one of the greatest human challenges of the 21st century. Improving the performance of internal combustion engines and reducing the amount of pollutant emissions has always been a concern for researchers. The use of alternative fuels and the control and adjustment of the lamb...

Energy and Exergy Analyses of a Diesel Engine Running on Biodiesel Fuel

Availability analysis is an effective approach to studying energy conversion in systems and identifying inefficiency. In the present study, a single-zone model was used to examine energy performance parameters and heat release rates. The governing equation of availability analysis was applied in the model, and the possibility of using biodiesel produced from sunflower oil as diesel engine was i...

Modeling the effects of biodiesel-diesel fuel blends on CO2 emission of a diesel engine by response surface methodology

Nowadays biodiesel is receiving more attention as a most important renewable energy for using in diesel engines. Inthis research, the application of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was highlighted to investigate the effects of biodiesel-diesel blends (B0, B20, B50 and B100), engine operating parameters (engine load and  speed) on CO2 emission of a diesel engine. The experiments were conducte...

Characteristics of carbonyl compounds emission from a diesel-engine using biodiesel–ethanol–diesel as fuel

Characteristics of carbonyl compounds (carbonyls) emissions from biodiesel–ethanol–diesel (BE–diesel) were investigated in a Commins-4B diesel engine and compared with those from fossil diesel. Acetaldehyde was the most abundant carbonyls in the exhaust, followed by formaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde. Apliphatic carbonyls emitted from BE–diesel were higher than those from d...

Numerical investigation of the variation of compression ratio on performance and exhaust emission of a turbo-diesel engine

Changing the compression ratio and presence of turbocharger are two important issues, affecting on performance, and exhaust emissions in internal combustion engines. To study the functional properties and exhaust emissions in regards to compression ratio at different speeds, the numerical solution of the governing equations on the fluid flow inside the combustion chamber and the numerical solut...
